Mushroom Myth-Busting

Today, weโ€™re setting the record straight.

Mushroom myths have been making their way around campuses, cubicles, and communities for decades.

Most of them are ridiculousโ€”no, psilocybin wonโ€™t linger in your spineโ€“-but others do too much harm to ignore.

Letโ€™s bust three all-too-common myths before they can spread any further. โ†“

Myth 1: Psilocybin is Dangerous

Psilocybin mushrooms are incredibly safe when used responsibly, with minimal risk of toxicity or overdose.

Letโ€™s break it down: the LD50 (lethal dose) for psilocybin is about 280 mg/kg of body weight.

For an average 90 kg person, this translates to consuming nearly 2,000 grams of P. Cubensis mushroomsโ€”thatโ€™s almost 4.5 pounds!

Most people take doses in the .05โ€“5 gram range, making overdoses virtually unheard of.

So, go ahead and enjoy a piece of that psilocybin chocolate bar!

Myth 2: โ€œTrippingโ€ Fries Your Brain

Psilocybin doesnโ€™t fry your brainโ€”it reboots it.

Research from Imperial College London shows that psilocybin enhances brain activity and connectivity, especially in areas related to emotional regulation and sense of self.

After psilocybin-assisted therapy, participants report feeling as though their brains have been โ€œresetโ€ or โ€œrebooted.โ€

The effects can last weeks, providing relief for those with depression and anxiety.

One participant described it as โ€œdefraggingโ€ their brain, much like cleaning up a cluttered computer hard drive.

This isnโ€™t brain damageโ€”itโ€™s neurogenesis!

Psilocybin isnโ€™t just safeโ€”it could revolutionize how we treat mental health.

Myth 3: Shrooms Are Addictive

Not only are psilocybin mushrooms non-addictive, but theyโ€™re also showing promise in treating addiction.

A systematic review revealed psilocybin-assisted therapy significantly reduced heavy drinking and smoking rates.

In one trial, 80% of participants were abstinent from smoking at six months post-treatment, and 67% remained smoke-free after a year.

33% of participants in the alcohol trial achieved complete abstinence over several years.

NBC News spoke with a participant, Jon Kostas, who had struggled with drinking since age 12.

At the time of the trial, he was averaging 23 drinks per bender, despite attempts at rehab.

Kostas shared experiencing โ€œa vivid scene of a glass bottle of alcohol in the desert.โ€ When the bottle disintegrated, he knew he could quit drinking.

โ€œYou take the pills to wipe it out, and itโ€™s gone,โ€ Kostas shared. Though, โ€œthe second and third sessions sealed the deal.โ€

As you can see, this myth couldnโ€™t be more wrongโ€”psilocybin sparks freedom, not dependency.

Final Thoughts: Mushroom Myth-Busting

Psilocybin has been misunderstood for far too long.

These myths, whether born from fear or misinformation, distract us from its true potential.

When approached with respect, intention, and care, psilocybin mushrooms offer transformative experiences, emotional healing, and even a path to breaking harmful habits.
